Councillors Call For Upgrades on Longford to Dublin Rail Line

Councillors in Longford are calling for improvements to be made to the rail network connecting the county to the capital.

It has been said that for the town and the county as a whole to move forward and attract companies and workers to the county, fast access to and from the capital is essential.

Speaking at a special meeting of Longford County Council last week, Cllr John Browne stated: ““The way ahead is to totally upgrade the railway infrastructure between Maynooth and Longford and heading on to Sligo. However, there is no reference to that specifically contained within the revised strategy.”

“Trends within the industry state that there is an over reliance on private cars to travel to and from work and education. Therefore for Longford town and county to progress, the time it takes to travel by rail from Longford to Connolly station requires a reduction of 45 minutes to one hour.”
