Cork County Council’s ‘Big Bike Ride’ Raises almost €3,000 for Charity

The Big Bike Ride is an annual cycle undertaken by staff of Cork County Council each year to raise money for charity. In its five years of running it has raised a total of over €17,000 for various chosen charities, including Down Syndrome Ireland, Katie’s Wish to Walk, CUH Childrens’ Ward and Suicide Aware.

This years cycle was lead by Cllr John Paul O’Shea, Mayor of the County of Cork. As well as raising money for charity, the event aims to promote a healthy lifestyle for Cork County Council Staff., while also highlighting the county’s ‘Bike to Work’ scheme. Not only that, but the route of the cycle takes the more ambitious Council staff on a 115km journey from Castletownbere where they can experience the Wild Atlantic Way; one of the counties many attractions.

46 staff members took to the road on their own personal time to join the Big Bike Ride 2015. There were also 13 members of staff cycling a stationary bike in the County Hall Foyer to highlight their efforts amongst the public.

The charity chosen for this years cycle was The Friends of Marymount; a charity that has supported many people through tough times in their lives. The charity was also the beneficiary of the Cork County Mayor’s Charity Ball 2015, which raised almost €50,000 for the charity. A coffee morning hosted by the Mayor also raised another €1,200 for Marymount Hospice.

Tim Lucey, Cork County Council Chief Executive said: “Our greatest strength in Cork County Council is our staff. We place an extremely high value on both their contribution and dedication. With an awareness of the importance of healthy mind and body, we have placed a greater emphasis on, and encourage participation in, healthy lifestyle initiatives that will reap benefits both at work, at home and into the larger community. The staff who gave up their own time to organise and partake in The Big Bike Ride 2015, in aid of The Friends of Marymount, are to be commended as this type of an event leads to a very positive culture within the organisation and portrays a very positive image to the customers of Cork that we serve”.

The Big Bike Ride 2015 has also been the recipient of the Public Sector Magazine Award for November 2015.
