DLR Council Encourages Schools to Apply for Cycle and Scooter Parking

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has been allocated funding from the National Transport Authority to deliver cycle and scooter parking to schools.

All schools in the County have been contacted and requested to apply to the Council for the cycle parking and/or scooter parking and outline what they are doing to promote cycling on the journey to and from school. The deadline for applications is the 16th March 2022.

In 2021, 23 toasters cycle stands (parking for 10 bikes each) and 31 scooter stands (parking for 10 scooters each) were supplied to 23 schools around the County.

In addition, the Council is rolling out cycle parking at high demand locations around the County and is continuing to support the provision of cycle training to 5th and 6th classes in schools as part of the Department of Transport Cycle Right programme.

An Cathaoirleach Cllr Lettie McCarthy stated, “I welcome this initiative from the Council to continue supplying cycle and scooter parking to schools and I hope this will encourage more children to cycle to school. I also welcome the continuing support from the National Transport Authority for the development of Active Travel Schemes and of cycle infrastructure around the County.”

Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council actively promotes cycling as a safe, healthy, and environmentally friendly mode travel mode and is currently developing a significant number of cycling infrastructure schemes in the County as part of the National Transport Authority Sustainable Transport Measures Grants (STMG) Programme.
