Launch of the Waterways Ireland Digital Archive

The Waterways Ireland Digital Archive has been launched by Malcolm Noonan T.D., Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage on Tuesday 29th June.

The history of the inland waterways will be more accessible than ever with the launch of the new Waterways Ireland Digital Archive by Minister Malcolm Noonan T.D, with Waterways Ireland CEO, John Mc Donagh.

The Digital Archive of over 7,800 items contains a range of collections from engineering maps and drawings, an oral history collection, and the donated collections of Dr Ian Bath, Ruth Delany and Charlie Hayden which includes slides, photos, videos and documents of the Royal Canal, the River Shannon and beyond.

Visitors to the Digital Archive will also be able to view themed exhibitions, Stories of the Waterways and Timelines of the Waterways as well as listen to stories, see videos from the last 60 years and view over 200 years of waterway engineering history.
