Mayo Day 2020 will celebrate Creative Mayo – Save the Date !

Mayo Day, a celebration of our county’s vibrant culture and community spirit, returns for its 6th consecutive year on May 2nd 2020.  Over the last number of years, the Mayo Day campaign has been an enormous success, garnering worldwide attention with events taking place locally, nationally and internationally that pay tribute to the ingenuity, pride and accomplishments of Mayo people the world over.

In 2019 the theme of the campaign was ‘The Mayo Word’ which focused on extolling the literary accomplishments of renowned novelists, poets and songwriters from this bastion of arts in the West of Ireland.  Building on the incredible interest and participation in last year’s festivities, it has been decided that this year’s expansive theme will be ‘Creative Mayo.’

The campaign will give the people of Mayo an opportunity to explore and celebrate their creativity, ingenuity and talent, and will culminate in a flagship public event at the National Museum of Country Life in Turlough on May 2nd.

Chief Executive of Mayo County Council, Peter Hynes commented on the initiative saying: “Mayo Day 2020 is about cherishing our culture and giving people the chance to show their pride of place.  It is an opportunity to celebrate what lies at the heart of County Mayo and its people – a natural passion for creativity; whether it be in the arts, music, business, or any other creative endeavour.”

Plans are also underway to host a Mayo Day ‘Creative Conference’ – a chance to bring together some of Mayo’s most innovative minds from various backgrounds, occupations and locations.  More details to follow in the early new year.

Cllr Brendan Mulroy, Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, said that: “Mayo Day is a celebration of our home and our community spirit.  It is about uniting people at home and abroad who all share one thing in common – a love of their county.  Over the last number of years, we have seen huge participation from the Mayo diaspora, and we would love to see #MayoDay trending on social media once again this year, to show the world how proud the people of this county are of their heritage.”

Turlough’s National Museum of Ireland – Country Life, is renowned for its beautiful location and immaculate grounds.  Manager Karena Morton has expressed delight at once again hosting the main event, saying: “Mayo Day has been a fantastic success story year-on-year, and Mayo County Council’s flagship Mayo Day event is a vibrant, engaging and fun way to bring people of all ages together to join in this celebration.”

The celebrations surrounding the ‘Creative Mayo’ theme are sure to stimulate interesting and productive discussion, allowing the people of Mayo to express their creativity in a multitude of ways.

Mayo County Council are encouraging people to participate and to attend the climactic event in Turlough’s National Museum on May 2nd – a date for the diary!  To follow the action and stay up to date with news and updates, stay tuned to:
