Minister Launches New Plan to Improve Physical and Mental Health in County Clare

Minister of State for Health Promotion, Catherine Byrne, T.D., along with Mayor of Clare, Councillor Michael Begley recently announced a new three-year strategy aimed at improving physical and mental health in County.

The new plan, entitled The Healthy Clare Strategic Plan 2019-2021 is being put into place by Clare LCDC (Local Community Development Committee). The aim of it is to deliver a wide range of activities to residents of the county in order to improve both mental and physical health.

The Health plan also will look at tackling the negative effects of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs. Speaking about the new Health Plan, Mayor of Clare, Councillor Michael Begley said, “What this Strategy does is lay the foundations for all decision making by the members of the LCDC in supporting the delivery of a range of activities that will underpin the health and wellbeing of the people of County Clare. The delivery of this blueprint will also be enabled by the Healthy Ireland Fund.”

Andrew Dundas, Chair of the LCDC, added, “The Healthy Clare Strategic Plan represents the commitment of Clare LCDC to support the delivery of a range of activities that will underpin the health and wellbeing of the people of County Clare.”

“The determinants of health and well-being are many and their interactions complex,” he added. “They encompass physical, psychological, social, economic, environmental, political and cultural factors. The action plan aims to exploit the synergies of inter-agency co-operation and community engagement where goodwill and collaboration will generate new activities and enhanced outcomes for communities and individuals alike.”
