Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, Cllr Joe Cooney, held a Civic Reception to mark the recent outstanding achievements by the Clare Junior Camogie and Clare Minor Hurling panels.
The reception honoured the Clare Junior Camogie panel for winning the All-Ireland Premier Junior Camogie Championship for the first time since 2008, as well as the Clare Minor Hurlers for winning both the Munster and All-Ireland Minor Hurling Championship.
Addressing the audience in attendance, Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, Cllr Joe Cooney, said, “this event is one which affords the Council an opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding success of both panels in attendance. As a lifelong GAA man myself, it was an honour to watch both panels this year and I was over the moon to see both sides bring All-Ireland success back to County Clare.”
The Clare Junior Camogie panel won the All-Ireland Final on Sunday, 6th August, in Croke Park, defeating Munster rivals Tipperary by 3-7 to 1-9, while the Clare Minor Hurlers claimed their Munster title in May, beating Cork by 7 points, before winning the All-Ireland Minor Hurling Championship on Sunday, 4th June, beating neighbours Galway by a scoreline of 2-22 to 4-11.
Both captains, Sinéad O’Keeffe and Eoghan Gunning, along with both managers, John Carmody and Brian O’Connell, accepted glass presentation pieces and Civic Reception Presentation Scrolls on behalf of their respective panels and management teams, from the Cathaoirleach.
Following his opening address, Cllr Cooney added, “to both panels in attendance here today, to the coaches and the backroom staff – each and every one of you are a credit to yourselves, your families, your clubs and your county. I look forward to seeing you all in County Clare colours over the next few years and I have no doubt that many of you will be back in Croke Park in no time. Up the Banner!”
