Kerry County Council Launches Rock Road, Cycle Lanes and Footpath Project

The new Rock Road, Cycle Lanes and Footpath Project was developed by Kerry County Council for the provision of cycle lanes on the arterial routes to Killarney town in 2021 as part of the overall plan for the provision of Active Travel Infrastructure in Killarney town.

Planning approval was granted by Killarney Municipal District Members for cycle lanes along Rock Road, Park Road, Lewis Road and Deerpark Road. Following planning approval, detailed designs were developed on a phased basis to deliver these projects.

The Rock Road Cycle Lanes and Footpaths Project has progressed through detailed design and funding has been allocated for the construction of this project.

Kerry County Council carried out advance works including storm drainage and ducting to underground the overhead lines on Rock Road during 2023. New public lighting was installed in February 2024 which forms part of this cycle lanes/footpath project.

The Kerry County Council and the National Transport Authority (NTA) have been in regular discussions to advance this project to the construction stage with a view to having the works completed before this summer season.

The National Transport Authority issued its annual grant allocation to Kerry County Council in February 2024 with an allocation of €1.2m for the Rock Road project.

The Council procured a contractor for the works. The National Transport Authority provided approval to award the construction contract on the 5th of April 2024. Following receipt of this approval, the council engaged with the contractor to commence works on the 22nd of April.

The funding for this project is allocated on a yearly basis.  It is essential, therefore, that the works are completed at this time to ensure that this grant funding can be availed of in full.

Kerry County Council will continue to liaise with residents, businesses and all relevant stakeholders during the construction of this project.

A one-way system will be in place on Rock Road for the duration of these works, for a period of approximately three months. Entry to Rock Road from the Cleeny roundabout will be prohibited from 9:00am to 6:30pm daily on weekdays from Wednesday, 24th of April. Works will not commence until after 9.00am each morning to accommodate commuters and the school run. Outbound traffic will not be affected.

Diversion signage will be in place directing traffic via the Bypass to Lewis Road for traffic going into the town centre and via Hans Liebherr Road to St Margaret’s Road and New Road for Rock Road. All residents and businesses on Rock Road will be contacted in advance of construction works.

Kerry County Council is continuing to enhance the public infrastructure in Killarney and wishes to thank members of the public for their patience and cooperation during these essential works.
