Mayo County Council & An Garda Siochana Launch New Road Safety Awareness Film Ahead Of Christmas

Mayo County Council’s Road Safety Office have launched a new Road Safety awareness campaign short film in conjunction with An Garda Siochana ahead of the Christmas Period.

The theme of the campaign is ‘The Choice is Yours’ and was filmed on location in Westport by Mayo based production company Western Front Studios.

The awareness film will be promoted across all Mayo County Council’s social media channels over the Christmas period to encourage people to make the right decisions when it comes to road safety.

Launching the short film Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr Michael Loftus said, “we don’t want to see anyone lose their life on the roads at any stage, but by drinking and driving you are exponentially increasing the chances of getting involved in an accident and that may cost you your life or somebody else’s life. People have a choice to make, and we want to ensure that they make the correct choice when they get behind the wheel of a car.”

Chief executive of Mayo County Council, Kevin Kelly added, “Mayo County Council takes a very proactive approach to road safety and education around it. With this new awareness campaign and film, we are trying to reinforce the simple message that you should never drink and drive and with more people socialising over the next few weeks, we felt it was important to reinforce this message at this time.”

Speaking about the campaign, Gary Smyth, Acting Road Safety Officer with Mayo County Council said, “while we are launching this awareness campaign with the Christmas period coming up and people are going to Christmas parties and other social events, the message itself is timeless – it’s about making the right decision and not drinking and driving  as the campaign says ‘The Choice is Yours’ but it’s up to you to make the right choice and we want to see people make the right one. I have to say a thank you to An Garda Siochana for coming on board to assist with its production and the Mayo Fire Service.”
