‘Map My Park’ Project Launched in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown

An Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Councillor Denis O’Callaghan visited Loreto Park in Rathfarnham to officially launch the latest Active Cities Dublin project, ‘Map My Park’, funded by Active Cities Dublin and Healthy Ireland. This project has been driven by the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Sports Partnership team and is an example of their aim to support all ages and abilities to be more active in their daily lives.

The information boards and route signage in five parks across Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown (Loreto, Clonmore, Cabinteely, Kilbogget, and Shanganagh) have been updated to provide clear, visible, and up-front information about the parks.

The boards include information on the size of the park, route distances, inclines, and locations of benches, toilets and matters of interest. There are also directional distance markers located around the parks at various intervals, which are also marked on the maps. This information will help to inform decision making and allow for improved awareness and usage of the parks.

Councillor Denis O’ Callaghan, Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council stated, “this is a very simple but effective way of improving our parks for the members of the local community to get active and stay active. Having clear and accessible information on local parks aims to help encourage people to plan their route and the distance markers can help to provide a sense of achievement or as motivation when using the paths.”

Frank Curran, Chief Executive of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council added, “the parks are receiving increased use by people of all ages and abilities and the environments are ever changing, therefore it is more important than ever for information such as amenities, inclines and terrain to be clearly displayed and easy to access.”

This project was funded through Healthy Ireland, the Dormant Accounts Fund and Active Cities. For more information see the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Sports Partnership website www.dlrsportspartnership.ie or email our Active Cities Officer [email protected].
