The Old Market House Arts Centre Dungarvan, and Waterford Arts Office are delighted to present the work of Eamon Gray (Abbeyside, Waterford and Longford) in a free exhibition of masterly crafted sculptures and medals made from marble, metal, wood, and a found object or two.
Much like the subheading of the exhibition, “It still tick-tocks, but I’m no longer sure it tells the correct time”, contemplation, reflection, and breath-taking craftsmanship, are coupled with humour, humility and unpretentious joie de vivre throughout the display. Coinciding with the anniversary of Eamon’s passing on October 21, 2022, the display is a celebration and tribute to a true creative spirit and unique talent.
Eamon Gray studied Fine Art at Crawford College of Art and Design from 1997 to 2002. While at college he entered medals into the British Arts Medal Society (BAMS) Student Medal Project, winning a prize in 2001 with ‘Dual Aspects’ and again in 2002 with ‘Tsuba’; the latter was subsequently acquired by the British Museum. From 2002-2003 Gray further developed his work researching casting techniques in the Crawford foundry. He exhibited in numerous group shows throughout Ireland, and his work is held in public and private collections in Ireland, England and across Europe.
Although Eamon did not consider himself a professional artist, throughout his lifetime he continually created exquisite sculpture and installation artwork. Fellow sculptor and collaborator James Horan notes, “having made some pieces for and with Eamon, I wish I could make many more. To share a glimpse of his abilities and methods was a privilege and a pleasure. The work on show here is a tribute to a great artist, a true friend and a beautiful human.”
The exhibition will be opens at the Old Market House from Culture Night on September 22nd and runs until October 28th. A private memorial will take place on October 21st.
The gallery is open to the public Tuesday – Friday 11:00 – 13:30 and 14:30 – 17:00 and Saturday 13:00-17:00. Admission is free for all.
