Seasonal shopping in Limerick offers the chance to soak up the festive atmosphere under the city’s twinkling lights, and, with a choice of options of how to get to and around Limerick this December, there is more reason than ever to shop local this Christmas.
As part of a series of initiatives to entice more people to shop and visit the city centre over the festive period, free car parking spaces will be made available at Limerick City and County Council’s car park at Merchant’s Quay.
The spaces will be available to Christmas shoppers and visitors to the city, for three weekends in December. The car park will be open on 03/04 December, 10/11 December, 17/18 December and also on Christmas Eve. Access to this car park is via Nicholas Street.
More than 8,000 on and off street car parking spaces are available in the city and parking is available on-street and in multi-storey car parks. Download the Limerick e-parking app, or pay by phone or disc. Parking is from just .50c per half hour (Monday to Saturday). On-street parking is free after 5.30pm daily and is always free on Sundays.
In Abbeyfeale, Kilmallock and Newcastle West, shoppers will get an extra two hours free parking in each of the towns from 2.30pm daily between 03 – 31 December inclusive. This is in addition to the first hour free. Parking is free on Sundays as always.
Information on bus routes and scheduled services to the city and across the county can be found on the Bus Eireann website (buseireann.ie) and Leap Cards can be used for savings on all buses.
Limerick is home to an eclectic array of locally owned stores, high street shopping, unique boutiques and gift shops filled with handmade treasures waiting to be discovered. For an eco-friendly gift, explore Limerick’s quirky vintage stores, selling clothing, crafts and upcycled furniture or stop by one of the many festive markets and fairs taking place in the lead up to Christmas.
Shoppers can enjoy late night city-centre shopping each Friday night and extra shopping opportunities every Sunday in the run up to Christmas, with the much-anticipated sales starting from 26 December.
Donn O’Sullivan, Head of Marketing & Communications with Limerick City and County Council said, “we are encouraging shoppers to give a little bit of Limerick this Christmas. Although online shopping can be convenient, nothing beats the personalised service of shopping in-store and soaking up Limerick’s festive atmosphere. From Christmas gift ideas to stocking fillers, you can always find something unique – one of the many benefits of shopping locally this Christmas in Limerick. And with more options to get you to and around the city, there’s more reason than ever to shop local this Christmas.”
So why not make Limerick your go-to destination for your Christmas shopping as you look for that something special for your someone special.
The Christmas in Limerick programme is co-ordinated by Limerick City and County Council’s Culture and Arts and Marketing and Communications Departments.
